Wendy and Lucy: On Losing What Keeps You Tethered
What happens to grief when the world around you leaves no room for it?
In this reflection on Kelly Reichardt's quiet, devastating film, I explore what it means to grieve when your circumstances leave very little room for grief at all. Wendy and Lucy is a film about a woman and her dog, but it is also about systems, about indifference, and about the rare and radical act of simply being seen by another person.
As a counsellor, I try to hold the people I work with not only in the context of their inner world but in the context of the wider one too. This film helped me think about why that matters.
This reflection continues over on my Substack, where I share longer-form writing on grief, loss, death, and the human experience.
